Typography is such a fun subject and one I really enjoy! I didn't quite know before taking this module about how some designers are crazy about certain fonts e.g. Helvetica. I definitely didn't know that making font posters was something that many designers do and collect.

Anyways, this poster aims to bring out the timelessness of the Franklin Gothic font. An earlier version was more literal with the fonts resembling a clock but this version simply alludes to timelessness through the gold colour and classic design.

I was pretty glad that I was assigned a nice font (in my opinion) for this project as I didn't like a few of the fonts my classmates got!

The Psychosis of the Ignorant

We are all on a quest for knowledge. The Bible says in 18:15, “An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge”. Every hour spent on education, every word searched on google brings us one step closer to our goal. However, despite it all, there will always be things that we do not know about. As humans, we have a limited capacity for knowledge. We can’t know everything!

On the other hand, though knowledge is sought after, sometimes we choose to reject it. John Lennon acknowledged that knowledge can be difficult to live with when he said: “living is easy with eyes closed”. Another oft heard quote reiterates: “ignorance is bliss”. So, which is better? To know or not to know, that is the question.

Consider this. Suppose one day, as I looked out of the window from my apartment on the thirteenth floor, I had this overwhelming urge to jump out of the window just because. That is stupidity, you would say. Yet, if I knew nothing about the law of gravity and had no idea of the consequences of such an action, wouldn’t I be safe from what I did not know? Of course not! Whether or not I’m aware of the law of gravity, the law still applies to me. Ignorance isn’t bliss because what we do not know will still hurt us.

I once was in a group of over a hundred youth when the question was asked: “How may of you keep in touch with what’s going on in the news?” Less than ten people raised their hands. There is so much going on in the world today that we cannot but be vigilant. Are you aware that human slavery is still rampant today? Are you aware that around 10% of Singaporeans live on $5 a day? Are you aware that almost all your online communications can be accessed by the government? Let’s not be deceived. Ignorance is not bliss — but knowledge is power.

“There is a condition worse than blindness, and that is, seeing something that isn't there.” — Thomas Hardy. According to Medical News Today, psychosis happens in two broad forms - hallucination and delusion. Both have much to do with this quote.

Imagine you got lost while trekking alone in the desert. With no food or water, you know your chances of surviving are slim unless you reach an oasis within a few hours. Suddenly, you see something in the distance. You rub your eyes and can’t believe what you see. Water! Excited, you quicken your pace and break into a run. This is too good to be true!

And it was too good to be true. What looked like water was a mirage. A mirage is a form of hallucination — seeing something that isn’t there.

In times past, it was widely believed that the earth was flat and square. It wasn’t until 330 BCE that Aristotle and other Greek thinkers proposed a spherical earth. Today, we know due to images from space, among other facts, that the earth is spherical. However, there are still groups of people such as those from the Flat Earth Society that hold to the belief despite scientific evidence. If someone calls you a "flat-earther" today, they are likening you to an individual who stubbornly adheres to discredited or outmoded ideas. “Flat-earthers” are deluded as they believe in something that isn’t true.

What about when it comes to society today? In a spiritual sense, do we hallucinate? Are we deluded? Maybe we don’t hallucinate but I would argue that we are deluded. Whether direct or subtle, the media today sends us messages that cause us to be deluded. If you don’t have such and such then you will never be happy, it says. If you don’t look a certain way then you’re not good enough, it tells you. You can live an immoral life and not suffer any consequences, it continues.

As the saying goes, “all that glitters is not gold”. Things are not always as they seem or as we are told. We are deluded if we listen without questioning. We are deluded if we do not seek out the truth for ourselves.
The Psychosis of the Lost

This design was inspired by this quote: “Minds that have withered into psychosis are far more terrifying than any character of fiction.” — Christian Baloga. Yes, the shocking part of this quote is how the writer describes psychosis as more terrifying than any character of fiction. I don’t know about you but I can think of plenty of terrifying characters of fiction that I would never want to meet in real life! And now, imagine what that means if psychosis is more terrifying than that. However, that being so, the question I dwelt on was why. Why is psychosis so terrifying?

The answer is in the word ‘withered’. It hints at a mind slowly dying away, a gradual loss of what was before. Hence, I summed the whole quote into one word: lost. The dictionary definition of the word ‘lost’ is: denoting something that has been taken away and cannot be recovered. To be lost is to have no hope.

In the Bible, there is a well-known story about a prodigal son. The prodigal son went to his father and demanded a portion of his inheritance. After getting the money, he left home and lived a life of pleasure and extravagance until he finally was destitute and decided to return home and reconcile with his father. The story ends with the father saying “It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.” — Luke 15:32. In the famous hymn “Amazing Grace”, the writer too concludes “I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see”.

Having chosen to form the word ‘lost’ out of withered flowers, I was advised to go out, buy some and bring them home to wait till they withered. Instead, I took a walk in the park and picked up withered flowers lying all over the ground. Though they retained some of their brilliant colours, they lay drooping by the wayside.

On that hot and sweltering day at that park, I slapped at mosquitos and contemplated the word ‘lost’. Physically, yes, it doesn’t seem like we are missing anything. We are alive and able to see - how can we be lost? But we are lost because in and of ourselves, we are dead to the reality of the spiritual and caught up with the material. We are blind and oblivious to the problems around us. We are without hope.

The Psychosis of the Lost

I had lots of fun drawing the doodles. Tried to keep with a very cheery feel. I drew it by hand, then vectorised and coloured it in Illustrator. While I'm happy with how they turned out, I definitely feel though that the doodles are too big and overwhelm the design. That is one thing that should be changed.

I realise that this design doesn't have a clear first and second page. As this is a flyer that will be dropped into homes, I felt that having an eye-catching design on both sides was the key as the flyer could land on either side.

One challenge of this project was having to come up with the copywriting too!
